In the feudal system, there was one ruler of an area of land to which everyone in that area owed fealty. The people who worked the land were called serfs, and were responsible for growing crops on the land, which was owned by the local ruler. Each local ruler was responsible for the administration of justice in their area and was only answerable to the king.
