History
According to one legend, the circles are so called because the Hindu god Shiva created them from ghee ( ghrit in Sanskrit ). This etymology reflects the community's traditional occupation of animal husbandry and agriculture . However, some members of the community trace their lineage to a sage named Ghrit Rishi, and claim connections to the mythological Kauravas mentioned in the Mahabharata . The community belongs to the Jat Kshatriya clan. [1]
H.A. Rose [1] writes that the folk etymology derives Ghiratha from ghee, because Shiva created him from ghee. In Hoshiarpur the circles are called Bahati. In India they are called Jat. Chang is a Punjabi name, and Ghirth is a hill word. [3]
Jat tribe of Himachal about which most people are unaware. [4]
Ghirth is a Pahari word which means ghee. This community is basically Jat who settled in the hilly areas from Rajasthan and Punjab 700 years ago. James Lippin Lyall writes on page 640 that the Jat people in the hilly areas are called Ghirth. The reason for this is their consumption of ghee in large quantities, hence they are called Ghee Ahari i.e. Ghirath. Chaudhary of Himachal is called Ghirath whereas throughout India Chaudhary is considered synonymous with Jats. [5] Ghirath people also believe their origin from Lord Shiva because in the Hindu holy book Dev Samhita, the origin of Jats is said to be from Shiva. Like their Jat (Jatt) brothers, this hill Jat is also an excellent farmer and brave soldier. Among them, women have a respectable place among the Jats, hence when they become widows, they get remarried like the Jats, which is a proof of their being Jat Kshatriyas. In Punjab, the kings and Maharajas are Jats (Jatts). These brave Jats foiled Mohammad Tughlaq's attack on Karachil i.e. Nagarkot. There are 360 clans of Chaudhary in Himachal who reside in Kangra, Una and adjoining Hoshiarpur of Punjab. Their entire clan belongs to the Jat community. In the eastern part, they are called Chang Chahang. In the west, this word Chahang is basically Chahad, which is the clan of Jats, which is called Chahar in Braj region and Chahal in Punjab.
Girth are the most hard working people of himachal , they are working farmers who grow crops by working hard with their blood and sweat. Those who rear all types of milch animals like cow, buffalo and goat, who work hard on the land throughout the year. To whom the Brahmin and Rajput castes together gave the status of non- untouchable lower class and upper lower caste for their own benefit. Because these people knew that grains, vegetables, milk and water to fill their stomachs would come from the hands of this lower caste. That is why these people could not stop Girth Lower Caste from coming inside the threshold of their house. Just as after a lot of hard work, curd is made from milk, buttermilk is obtained from curd and ghee is obtained from buttermilk, similarly the hardworker Girth community is also like ghee. The Sanskrit word for Ghee is Ghrit (farmer community).
Ghirth is a lower caste in Himachal Pradesh. They are NOT Jats, actually they have no identity of their own.

Ghirth is a separate caste, they want to step up in social hierarchy that's why they want to be called as Jatts. but they are different.According to a legend, the Ghirths are so called because the Hindu god Shiva made them out of ghee (ghrita in Sanskrit). This etymology is reflective of the community's traditional occupation of animal husbandry and agriculture. However, some members of the community trace their ancestry to a sage called Ghrit Rishi, and claim connections to the legendary Kauravas mentioned in the Mahabharata. The community also claims descent from the Rajput Kshatriyas. At the beginning of the 20th century, the Ghirths were the dominant low-caste cultivators and marginal landholders in the Himachal region. Since they were considered as a 'clean' (not untouchable) low caste, they were employed as domestic servants by the higher castes: their 'clean' status allowed them to perform tasks such as fetching water or cleaning cooking utensils, which the untouchable servants were not allowed to do. Nevertheless, the Rajput, who were the dominant landholding caste of the region, had imposed social restrictions on them. Around 1926, the Ghirths started a movement to achieve upward social mobility, and started opposing these restrictions. They refused menial work, creating difficulties for the higher castes that earlier employed them as servants.
Caste distinctions can vary by region and community in India. The term "ghirth" does not appear to be a common term for a specific caste. It is important to avoid making assumptions about someone's caste based on their name or surname.

There are about 1,50,000 Jats in Himachal Pradesh, they are mainly Hindu Jats. They are about 1% (approx) of the total population of the state. Recently Jats in Himachal Pradesh got OBC status with the efforts of Mr. Harnam Singh Gill, State president of Himachal Jat Kalyan Parishad. He can be contacted at 01892-232283 for more information. Mostly Jats are in army or migrated to others states for work. Jats are not politically active. There is only one MLA but minister in Himachal Pradesh cabinet from Jats. Jats in Himachal Pradesh are economically poorer than Jats in other states. They speak bholi- pharhi. Mainly Hindu jats are known by Chaudhary and Ghirth people. Regarding gotra generly Himachal Pradesh Jats are same gotra like in Punjab & Haryana few of them are- Kundhal, Gill, Kaundal/Kondal, Syal, Riar, Chang, Kang, Randhawa, Sandhu, Sidhu, Sahota, Bhatti, Khaire, Badal, Chawala, Kangri, Nara, Bhakal, Dhayal, Kahalon, Nanda, Rasen, Bains, Dadwal, Rilach, Bagga etc.
Bahti is One of largest group of Jatts in punjab.it is mixed group of jatt in which both types of jatts are found Hindu or Punjabi Both.but this caste has mani issues among people ,people are living in many defences.most occupation of this group is agriculture.in ancient time, people acquire 62 acres and that's they called bati, nad became Bahti with passage of time. Before that thay were bahniwal and were jimidar people but in 1800s,during sikh times ,,many bahti's become sikh and so,they become bahniwal jatt.but this community was not completly under siikhism. most part of it ,is also in hindu because many people left from this. today, people are liviny in many defences but real is that bahti are bahniawal jatt. and they are diffrent from other caste people like rajput, ghirth,Chang. these castes mostly have many defences.but is higher than saini's, rajputs.but, today ,this caste has not any minister .due to it,it is going backward. it is also found thay people are living by hiding their caste. but we need awareness as soon as possible we can do.
