Integrated education began in 1948 with Arkansas' state university and the University of Oklahoma law school under the presidency of Harry S Truman. Desegregation was not complete until the 1970s with the help of individuals such as Thurgood Marshall, Earl Warren, President John F. Kennedy and many others.

The first integated school in America was established when Johann Heinrich Antes, an immigrant from Freinsheim, Germany, on 3 June 1745 donated his house in Frederick Township. PA (today known as Upper Frederick, PA) for the school. The Frederick Township home (built by Johann in 1736) still exists today, is restored, and was listed as a National Historic Landmark on 27 April 1992.
