"Lawrence of Arabia", a British army liaison officer attached to Arab insurgent forces fighting the Ottoman Empire in 1916-18. Lawrence developed a keen understanding of irregular military strategy & tactics as well as exceptional insight into Arab aspirations and customs. A gifted writer, he somewhat overplayed his own part in the revolt, later portrayed in similarly epic terms in a 1962 film.
