when President Hindenburg died in 1934, Adolf Hitler (Chancellor of Germany combined the Chancellorship with Presidency and then held a plebiscite vote on August 19 1934. Intimidation, and fear of the communists, brought Hitler a 90 percent majority. He was now, for all intents and purposes, dictator.

West Germany, or the Federal Republic of Germany (or Bundesrepublik Deutschland) was allied politically with the U. S., the U. K., and France. The first head of state (called Chancellor rather than President) was Konrad Adenauer.

East Germany, or the German Democratic Republic (or Deutsche Demokratische Republik) was allied to the Soviet Union. The first head of state (called the General Secretary) was Wilhelm Pieck.
