George Washington was the first President under the Constitution of the United States. Prior to the adoption of the Constitution, the colonies/new states were governed by the Continental Congress, which had a president of the Congress, and the Article of Confederation, which had a president, although there was no separate executive branch under the Articles. Here is a listing of the presidents under the Articles, from the Wikipedia article entitled, "Articles of Confederation."

  • Samuel Huntington (March 1, 1781 - July 9, 1781)
  • Thomas McKean (July 10, 1781 - November 4, 1781)
  • John Nelson (November 5, 1781 - November 3, 1782)
  • Elias Boudinot (November 4, 1782 - November 2, 1783)
  • Thomas Mifflin (November 3, 1783 - October 31, 1784)
  • Richard Henry Lee (November 30, 1784 - November 6, 1785)
  • John Hancock (November 23, 1785 - May 29, 1786)
  • Nathaniel Gorham (June 6, 1786 - November 5, 1786)
  • Arthur St. Clair (February 2, 1787 - November 4, 1787)
  • Cyrus Griffin (January 22, 1788 - November 2, 1788)

Prior to the Revolutionary War (1775-1783) and the ratification of the US Constitution in 1788, there was no president. Following the completion of the Constitution, the first elected President of the United States was George Washington, in 1789.

During the First and Second Continental Congress, there were "presidents of Congress" who exercised no executive authority. This authority in fact had already been granted to Washington in 1775 as Commander in Chief of the US Military forces.
There was no president before George Washington.

There were no presidents of the United States before George Washington. There were presidents of Congress under the Articles of Confederation, but the two offices were very different.

The President of the United States is the executive officer of the United States and wields a huge amount of power. The Presidents of Congress under the Articles of Confederation were very limited in their executive powers and essentially served solely as the presiding officers of Congress.

The seven presidents of Congress under the Articles of Confederation were:

John Hanson (Nov 5, 1781 - November 3, 1782) was chosen unanimously by Congress (which included George Washington).

Elias Boudinot (1783)

Thomas Mifflin (1784)

Richard Henry Lee (1785)

Nathan Gorman (1786)

Arthur St. Clair (1787)

Cyrus Griffin (1788)

This information comes from George Grant, "The Forgotten Presidents".

George Washington was the first President elected under the current U.S. Constitution whose ratification created the nation known as the United States of America.

However, from 1781 to 1789, the United States functioned under the Articles of Confederation. Under the Articles, the presiding member of Congress had the official title of President of the United States in Congress Assembled, but he did not have any of the powers and responsibilities of a chief executive or commander-in-chief. During that period, there were ten presidents; the last one, before the ratification of the Constitution and the election of George Washington, was Cyrus Griffin of Virginia.
