The word highwayman is first attested from the year 1617. The term "highwayman" is mainly applied to robbers who traveled on a horse, as opposed to those who robbed on foot (foot-pads). Mounted robbers were widely considered to be socially superior to foot-pads.

People would usually become highway men during the middle ages because they had no food or money and robbing people on the highway was a easy but dangerous way for them to get food or money. Many of them did not do it because they were bad but becasue they needed food and money for their families.
