Slaves would die in the process by either suffocating or catching a disease e.g one slave might die of diarrhea (watery excretion); or another could die of dehydration due to the lack of water. The people who would take care of the slaves (i wouldn't consider take care) would not really give them food for days/weeks/months. Slaves could also die to the lack of food, if the feeders saw that you looked feeble and sick (even though you wasn't) they wouldn't give you food nor water they think its a waste of food.
