The US needed a land base from which to bomb Japan. With island hopping, they could attack weaker, less defended islands (as opposed to attacking every single island) in order to get close to the Japanese.

to seize the islands from the Japanese and to have total control of the pacific through the US navy, also some islands were strategically important for bombing raids over mainland Japan
