The United States is considered multicultural because it is a proverbial "melting pot" for a number of different cultures. From the Native Americans, to the Europeans who came later, to the number of immigrants from around the world pouring in today, the US has all kinds.

This term or label was placed on the United States for a few reasons:

1. For years & years, the USA, being a new and expanding country had a need for immigrants of all racial & ethnic groups at various levels to work from low paid labor jobs to high level scientific jobs.

2. This policy still exists to a lessor degree, however, it is generally accepted that even today, the USA takes in more immigrants than most other nations.

3. With the above mentioned peoples, from the 18th Century to the 21st, the melting pot, term means that for the most part new people have not forgotten their own heritages, but have grown to adopt the culture of the USA. Thus a melting pot of peoples becoming "Americans".
