George Washington is the very symbol of America and all that she stands for. He helped the United States in many important wars such as the French and Indian war, but he was most influential in the American Revolution. He was the first Commander-in-Cheif of the Continental army, and the first President of the United States. Also during the 1700s slavery was very common, and very few were against the practice of slavery. George Washington however once wrote to a friend, "there is not a man living who wishes more sincerely than I do, to see a plan adopted for the abolition of slavery."

Washington earned his respect through the years. As a young man, he was a respected surveyor and an officer for the British in the French and Indian War. After he inherited property he ran a large and successful plantation and became active in local government. When the colonies began to have meetings to discuss their common grievances with the British Government, he represented his colony and became a leader in the revolutionary movement. When independence was declared and war broke out, he was appointed commander of colonial forces, won the long war and chaired the convention that drew up the constitution. He was unanimously elected as the first president and served with distinction. People respected him because he was knew how to do things and get things done, and hone was honest and provably dependable.
