The Middle Colonies got the nickname because it was the Middle Colonies that planted and harvested wheat. This was a big economic success, and became a very popular item among all of the colonies, as well as for other countries.

because it grew MANY different types of cropsThe middle colonies had the most fertile soil which in turn grew the most crops such as wheat, which is the staple grain to make bread with. Without the fertile soils of the middle colonies, the rest of the colonies would have grown hungry.
