The ancient Egyptian people were grouped in a hierarchical system with the Pharaoh at the top and farmers and slaves at the bottom. The groups of people nearest the top of society were the richest and most powerful.
The Pharaoh was believed to be a God on earth and had the most power. He was responsible for making laws and keeping order, ensuring that Egypt was not attacked or invaded by enemies and for keeping the Gods happy so that the Nile flooded and there was a good harvest.
The Vizier was the Pharaoh's chief advisor and was sometimes also the High Priest. He was responsible for overseeing administration and all official documents had to have his seal of approval. He was also responsible for the supply of food, settling disputes between nobles and the running and protection of the Pharaoh's household.
Ancient Egyptian social structure did consist of many similarities between itself and our modern day social structure. It contained an overall ruler and beliefs that determined who said ruler was. Also similar in these social pyramids, there were five 'categories' people could be placed in. There was the royalty including the pharaoh and the high priests. The next class down was the Upper Middle Class, consisting of people who did still have an overall impact on community. This section included the highly educated and higher salaried of people. The Lower Middle Class was the average standard of living. People with a steady job and an overall livable life. Working down the ladder, there is the Working Class. These were individuals with unsteady professions and a higher risk of poverty. And finally, the Lower Class who were the less fortunate of most. They relied on poorly paying jobs and a supplied amount of food and money to live on. Most of this is still what we live by now and how we classify society.
