Poseidon, the god of the sea, was once dating Medusa. The two of them got it on in Athena's temple. Naturally, Athena wasn't very pleased, so she cursed Medusa and her two sisters, Stheno and Euryale, with ugliness (snakes for hair, etc.) as well as the ability to turn men who looked them in the eyes to stone (so that no man could ever look upon them again).
