The Pax Romana was important because it was a time of relative peace and prosperity. Under these conditions, Roman civilization, in all its aspects, was able to flourish all over the empire, setting the foundations for western culture.

The pax romana should not be understood as the time of roman peace which the name itself suggests. The Romans did wage wars during that period and there were civil strife's. The pax romana lasted from 31 BC when Octavian Augustus started rulling alone until 180 AD when Marcus Aurelius, ''the last of the good emperors'', died. That era is known as such because it was a time of prosperity and developement in every meaning. Although some crazies such as Nero and Caligula appeared their lunacies did not drain the fisc so utterly and immensly as it is popular to believe. After Aurelius came Commodus, his son, whose actions really did do harm to the empire becaouse of various revolts through out the empire.

The Pax Romana (27 BC-180 AD) was a period of relative political stability in the Roman Empire which started with the creation of rule by emperors by Augustus after the civil wars of the Late Roman Republic. Augustus established of a strong central government which was capable of controlling the governors of the provinces who had treated their provinces as if they were their personal fiefs. This control was based no the tight political and administrative grip of the emperors, who were absolute rulers.

This relative political stability is what aided trade. Stabiilty meant that trade between the provinces of the empire could flourish. Goods were traded all around the vast empire and beyond. It also reached Ethiopia, Arabia, Persia, India and China
