Well the republican period and the Roman Empire are 2 different things all together. If you look at Roman history at a glance you shall see 3 periods.

First the regal period then the republican period and finally the empire.

The republican period came about after the Romans disposed of the last king, Tarquinius Superbus. It lasted until the rise of Augustus as emperor. The republican system worked as a facade under the empire.
