The stories of Atlas in Greek Mythology and other mythologies vary quite a bit. The most common stories say that Atlas was not a god in Greek Mythology. His father was one of the Twelve Titans, who were deities, who battled against the Greek gods of Olympia. Atlas sided with the Titans in the battle. When the Titans lost, several of the second generation Titans, like Atlas, were given punishment for their roles against Olympia. Atlas was forced to spend eternity holding the weight of the entire celestial universe on his shoulders as his punishment from the Greek gods. Although there are pictures of Atlas holding the Earth on his shoulders, his punishment was actually more severe in that he had to hold the much more encompassing heavens on his shoulders as his burden.

Other stories place him also in Roman mythology, although that is disputed by some. Still other stories do list him as the god of Weightlifting and Heavy Burdens.
