main crops were spelt, millet, barley, vines and olives. fruit trees were also grown

According to ancient records sprouted Barley was highly prized and was fed to the Roman troops and actually was used as payment. It was supposedly used for strength and endurance. Makes sense as it has much more nutrients than regular barley. Cereals were the staple food, originally in the form of husked wheat being made into porridge, but later naked wheat, was made into bread. Also a lot of nuts and fruits were grown, especially grapes for wine.

The plant life of Rome in the ancient days was the same as today. It was the Mediterranean vegetation of central Italy, which is still much the same. The Romans did not use wheat to make bread. They used corn.

Vegetables were artichokes, asparagus, beans, beets, broad beans, broccoli, cabbages, carrots, celery, chickpeas, chicory, cucumbers, garlic, leeks, lentils, lettuce, mallow leaves, marrows, mushrooms, onions, parsnips, garden peas, grass peas, pumpkins, radishes, turnips and bitter vetch

Fruit was apples, apricots (they were introduced form Armenia) cherries (they were introduced form Turkey) figs, filberts, melons (they were introduced form Africa in the 1st century AD) olives, pears, peaches, damson plums (they were introduced from Syria) quinces and pomegranates (they were introduced from Africa). Lemons were introduced in the 1st century AD (They originated from India, Burma and China)

Nuts were almonds, chestnuts, hazelnuts, pine nuts, pistachios and walnuts.

The plants of ancient Rome were many of the same plants that are grown today. Some plants like corn, tomatoes, potatoes, and chocolate were New World plants that were not known to them, but plants like lemon trees/fruit, orange trees/fruit, lettuce, grape vines, olive trees, green beans, cabbage, artichokes, Italian cypress trees, and various bushes and trees that grow today in Italy.

The vegetation of Rome was as still is Mediterranean. Along the coast and in the lowlands there is Mediterranean scrub, Mediterranean pine, wild laurel and cork oak. At higher altitudes there are the white oak, holly oak, hornbeam, sycamore, elm, broom and chestnut and, at the higher levels , beechwoods. There is also riparian vegetation (vegetation near rivers, streams and lakes): poplar, willow, ash and tamarisk. Fruit bearing trees are olive, fig, lemon, peach, apricot, cherry, apple, and pear trees, and vines. Nut trees are almond, hazelnut and walnut trees.

In the days of ancient Rome there were no orange trees. They were introduced into Italy by the crusaders in the 11th century. Date palms were introduced into Italy by the Arabs
