Life was hard in those days- it took a huge effort just to raise and prepare food and make clothing, so most people worked in that area. I.e.

farmers, vintners, sheep and goat herd, weavers, millers, traders and merchants,

metal workers, smiths, masons, wood-workers, cobblers, fishermen, carpenters and course, house-hold drudges work- cooking, sewing, butchering, washing, cleaning.

There were some more specialized jobs- armor and weapon makers, soldiers, sailors, lawyers, physicians, priests, money-lenders, tax collectors, perfume and dye makers, architects , engineers, scribes, Accountants , prostitutes, etc.

Rich people had Greek slaves that checked childrens' spelling, and if it was wrong, the children were severely punished.

The ancient Roman jobs were the same as the jobs today with the exception of today's jobs that require computer or electrical knowledge. The ancient Roman society required just about the same goods and services that we do but they needed many more workers as they had no automation and few labor saving devices.

How dependent were the ancient Romans on slaves?

The Romans like all ancient societies were very dependent on slaves. Slaves were the automation of ancient societies. As all work had to be done by hand, many hands were needed to complete a project and slaves were those hands. Domestic slaves took care of house business and if their owner had more than one house a slave would be in total charge of one or more of them. A businessman would employ slaves as accountants, secretaries or assistants and of course, there were the personal valet slaves who took care of clothing, hairdressing, and all personal grooming.
