It would take about twelve years to be trained as a scribe. Only one person in a hundred could read or write back then. Scribes were needed to be the Accountants of their day. They recorded food coming in to the graneries. They calculated how much food and supplies were needed for government projects and tomb building. They could be hired to write reports and letters for those who did not know how to do such things.
Scribes not only did the writing. They made the papyrus.
