Egyptian scribes were record keepers. they recorded just about everything. things like the amount of grain harvested, taxes, preparing orders for temples and army supplies throughout the kingdom, how many cattle a farmer owned, long reports to the Viser about progress of work on the Pharaohs building sites, copy out religious, scientific and historical texts, drawing up contacts for the sale of land and goods, writing and reading letters to ordinary people who could not read themselves were all part of the role of being a scribe.

a scribe was someone who recorded information, or wrote it down. The Egyptians wrote on papyrus paper with ink.
