From my understanding of Greek Mythology, the Atrox worked with Hades to torment Mankind. So after hearing of Atrox's deeds, the Goddess of the Moon Selene took pity on Mankind and supposedly sent Daughters of the Moon to save Mankind from the Atrox's evil. It's home is the Underworld with Hades.

If this helps, I'm glad. You can read more on it if you read Daughters of the Moon by Lynne Ewing.
