The date traditionally given for the Fall of Rome is September 4, 476 AD, when Romulus Augustulus, who is described as the last emperor of the West Roman Empire, was deposed.

Nevertheless, there seems to be a consensus today that the fall of the Roman Empire was a process, rather than event, and that it took a very long time, decades to centuries.

Dates in the timeline of the decline and fall include the following:

  • 234-284 Crisis of the Third Century, in which the whole empire was in turmoil
  • 271, Abandonment of Dacia
  • 284 Diocletian divides the empire for administrative purposes
  • 313, Edict of Milan, which tolerated Christianity
  • 331, Final abandonment of Dacia
  • 357, Settlement of Franks within the Empire
  • 378, Battle of Adrianople
  • 380, Adoption of Christianity as the state religion
  • 383, Withdrawal of Roman troops from Britain
  • 395, Death of Theodosius I, after which the empire remained divided
  • 400, Settlement of Vandals within the Empire
  • 401, Entry of Visigoths into Italy
  • 406, Massive entry of Germanic tribes across the Rhine
  • 408, Death of Roman General Stilicho, leading to disarray in the Roman army
  • 410, Final withdrawal of Romans from Britain
  • 410, Sack of Rome by Visigoths
  • 410, Suevi set up kingdom in Spain
  • 418, Kingdom of the Visigoths awarded territory in Gaul
  • 428, Franks extend their kingdom in northern Gaul
  • 434-453, Constant threat from Attila the Hun
  • 441, West Roman Empire recognizes Vandal Kingdom in North Africa
  • 443, Burgundians settle there Kindom in southern Gaul
  • 454, Roman Emperor sends Visigoths into Spain to recover land from the Suevi
  • 454, Visigoths add territory taken from the Suevi to their own kingdom
  • 455, Sack of Rome by Vandals
  • 476, Deposition of Romulus Augustulus and transfer of imperial authority over the West Roman Empire to Emperor Zeno in the East Roman Empire
  • 468, Destruction of a fleet sent to defeat the Vandals
  • 480, Death of Julius Nepos, last recognized Emperor of the West
  • 486, Loss of the Dominion of Soissons, the last major Roman enclave in Gaul
  • 493, Ostrogothic Kingdom of Italy founded
  • 533-534, Roman Empire recovers North Africa
  • 535-554, Roman Empire recovers Rome and most of Italy
  • 568, Kingdom of the Lombards Established in Italy
  • 584, Visigoths take control of the kingdom of the Suevi
  • 603, Last recorded actions by the Senate of the Roman Empire in Italy
  • 610, Official language of the Medieval Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire) is changed from Latin to Greek

Some historians regard the change from Latin to Greek as the date of the beginning of the Byzantine Empire. Legally, it was still called the Roman Empire.
