The Middle Kingdom ended in the 18th Dynasty shortly after Tutankhamun's reign. Tutankhamun did not successfully produce an heir, so after his death his advisor, Ay, ruled for a short time, followed by Tut's general, Horemheb. The 19th Dynasty marks the beginning of the Late/New kingdom with the reign of Ramses I. This time marks the end of the Armana Revolution.

When answering this question, where exactly is 'The Old Kingdom'?

Many periods during ancient civilizations were refered to as 'The Old Kingdom' so until this is established, a thorough answer is difficult to submit.

Assuming you are referring to ancient Egypt, there were many factors that contributed to the downfall of the Old Kingdom. Regardless of the civilization you are referring to, these factors will be relevant.

The main issues involved in the collapse of the Old Kingdom are, religious, social and political.

During this time the Sun God Re was becoming more recognised so there was a shift in religious following. You will find evidence of this in the artworks and architecture of this time.

Ancient Egypt was also struck by a mass drought at this time. This desroyed the social structure and economy. The famine experienced at this time was extreme.

This in turn affected the political standings of the kings. People stopped believing that they were god on earth and that they were that devine. As people began to follow the sun God more, the people lost interest in their kings.
