The Romans settled in London because they noticed a river (now known as the River Thames), and saw that it could be very useful for many things such as water (growth, survival), transport and trade. So, they built a settlement on the North Bank and chose a spot in two small hills which was very good for defence. Defence and water are the two main reasons why they chose London.

The term foundation of Rome does not refer to the building of a new city. It refers to the foundation of the Roman city-state.

Romulus, the founder of Rome and its first king, united the separate settlements on what where to become the Seven Hills of Rome (the Palatine, Caelian, Esquiline, Viminal, Quirinal, Capitoline and Aventine) into a single state under his rule. It is said that the foundation of Rome involved a fusions between Latins who lived in the area and Sabines who lived on the Quirinal and Viminal hills. The date of the foundation is given by the Roman tradition as 753 BC.

The area of Rome was settled long before the foundation of the city-state. The earliest archaeological evidence in the area of the future Rome have been found by the river Tiber and date to the 14th-13th century BC; that is, some 500 years before the foundation of the city-state. The earliest finds in the area of the Roman Forum date to the 11th century BC and those on the Palatine Hill date to the 10th century BC.

The early Romans were farmers; the Italian peninsula was - and remains - a highly fertile area of land, also offering abundant food in the ocean and waterways.
