Because king Menes created it.
Memphis is important because The city was founded by King Menes, the king who unified Upper & Lower Egypt, in 3,100 BC by creating dikes to protect the area from Nile floods.
It also had other names, e.g., "City of Ramesses" because the ramessides later ruled from there (650-550 BC). When the Phoenicians controlled Memphis, it was called Phon or Noph (the reverse of Phon). We also read in Bibles "Migdol" (meaning Tyre or Tower) as a name for Memphis. "Migdol" was the Jewish nickname for Tyre because of the towers the Tyrians constructed at their fortresses. These towers housed archers ready to frighten off would-be raiders of Tyre's precious stones and metals these fortresses guarded.
Memphis-Migdol-Pithom-Noph-Phon-Ramesses-Tahpanhes-Si en Ptah was a handy place for Phoenicians to base themselves because its suburbs became industrial centres for processing African produce shipped down the Nile. Mr Budge's dictionary refers to Heri P-Temai or the suburbs of P-Temai which was Pithom. That's why searchers rarely find Pithom in dictionaries because it is hidden under Heri P-Temai. However, a lot more is being hidden because of the false Egyptian chronology which bedevils any proper research into ancient Egyptian history.
