They provided a settlement option for surplus populations of the city-states. The surplus were packed into ships and sent out to seize new land and establish their own cities around the Mediterranean and Black Seas. Over 2,000 were established.

They had been able to establish colonies over a period of more than 300 years, from 1000 to 650 B.C.E. And later started colonies in Spain, France, Italy, and Africa, and along the coast of the Black Sea.
