Some people believe this is possible by the way light is shown to come from the left or from the right in a painting. My opinion is that it is possible for any painter to paint light from whichever direction he/she chooses, and that it is not possible to decide with any certainty which hand the painter uses.
Learning to paint is something that even novices can do with the right instruction. Sites on the web like YouTube, Oxford Online, and blogs like Secrets of a Modern Painter are all good options.

I wasn't sure how to ask a question. I am in the same position. I bought an oil painting back in 1992. It is a painting of a girl in turn of the century fashion. She is leaning on her knee on a piano bench with her hand on the keys. I have tried for YEARS to find something out about this. Somebody out there must know something. Please help! On the bottom right corner the name Paragol is printed. Any information will be greatly appreciated. my email isilligrl69@yahoo.comThank you for reading this.

In most paintings Mary is seen to be on the left of the manger. Presumably the artist thinking that Mary was right handed. This being so it would have been easier for her to have lifted the child. But then it is all according if one is looking at the back of Mary, or at the head of the manger,if so she would have been on the right.
