There are some people who don't necessarily agree that he is the BEST artist in the world and I will not debate that because it is a matter of personal taste. But your question is who is the most FAMOUS, and Leonardo da Vinci is without a doubt the most famous. Just think about it; even though Leonardo died in 1519, his name is still widely recognized in all corners of the world!

In the US perhaps Jasper Johns. In Germany Anselm Kiefer. Etc...

Some consider Damien Hirst, Jeff Koons, etc. But their art is controversial, they actually don't "put their hands on". Who do the work are theirs assistants.

And they are not painters!

I don't know if some of the masters of painting are still alive.

I like the artwork of the Brazilian artist Beatriz Milhazes, for me, she's the best painter alive.
