No, most people in the middle ages were "peasants" or "serfs" who worked under feudal "Lords of the Manor" who protected them while they tilled the soil to grow crops and raised sheep and goats for meat and milk. The people that knew how to read and write at that time were scholars - mainly belonged to the "church" - monks, and bishops and the like.
