Hannibal was the son of one general and the nephew of another. He was on campaign with his father in what is now Spain when his father died. His uncle succeeded his father, and when his uncle was assassinated, because of the courage and skill that Hannibal had shown on campaign, the army selected him to take his uncle's place.
