The Empire began declining and eventually a plague spread and everyone in rome died of it. Then the French invaded and took control of Italy for over 2000 years and finlly in 1984 it was regained by a militia of the only 300 remaining italiens in the world.

The Roman Empire rose to power basically because of their strong army. Treaties and alliances added to their territories, but the conquests added much more territory and trade opportunities.
