The atrium was the inner courtyard of the house of the rich (domus). It could be said that it resembled the forum of a city in that it was the hub of the public life of a household, a bit like the forum was the hub of the public life of a city. Visitors were seen or entertained in the atrium.

What is the forum of the early republic?

The Roman forum (or forum magnum, as the Romans called it) was the city's civil centre. This forum was already there during the preceding period of the Roman monarchy. It had the regia (the house of the king), the senate house, the comitia (an assembly place for speeches and for voting) and various temples. In the early Republic there was the construction of more temples, including the Temple of Saturn, which housed the treasury. There was a much greater development of the forum in the mid- and late Republic and in the period f rule by emperors.
