It is when the Greek Gods' submerged the people of earth into complete darkness. where they were attacked by mythical creatures with various powers. Many people don't believe the dark ages really took place and deny all accounts of them really occurring yet evidence tells us differently for example there are many Greek stones engraved with these stories. Hope this helps.

The Greek Dark Ages, also called the Bronze Age Collapse, lasted from about 1100 BC to about 750 BC. The Trojan war was fought before this collapse and Homer (or someone) wrote down the stories of that time as the Iliad and The Odyssey, after that Dark Age had ended.

NOTE:

Caution has to be exercised with the term Greek Dark Ages, because there was also a period from about 650 to 800 AD called the Byzantine Dark Ages.

The Greek Dark Age or Ages and Geometric or Homeric Age (ca. 1200 BC–750 BC) are terms which have regularly been used to refer to the period of Greek historyfrom the presumed Dorian invasionand end of the Mycenaean Palatial civilization around 1200 BC, to the first signs of the Greek poleis in the 9th century BC. These terms are gradually going out of use, since the former lack of archaeological evidence in a period that was mute in its lack of inscriptions (thus "dark") has been shown to be an accident of discovery rather than a fact of history.[1]

The archaeological evidence shows a widespread collapse of Bronze Age civilization in the eastern Mediterranean world at the outset of the period, as the great palaces and cities of the Mycenaeans were destroyed or abandoned. Around this time, the Hittite civilization suffered serious disruption and cities from Troy to Gaza were destroyed. Following the collapse, fewer and smaller settlements suggest famine and depopulation. In Greece the Linear B writing of the Greek languageused by Mycenaean bureaucrats ceased. The decoration on Greek pottery after ca 1100 BC lacks the figurative decoration of Mycenaean ware and is restricted to simpler, generally geometric styles (1000–700 BC). It was previously thought that all contact was lost between mainland Hellenes and foreign powers during this period, yielding little cultural progress or growth; however, artifacts from excavations at Lefkandi on the Lelantine Plainin Euboea show that significant cultural and trade links with the east, particularly the Levant coast, developed from c 900 BC onwards, and evidence has emerged of the new presence of Hellenes in sub-Mycenaean Cyprus and on the Syrian coast at Al Mina

Greece was called the "DARK AGE", because the major settlements was already abandoned. The people wanted to have new pastoral lifestyle. They have experience "lack of supply" because of the wars that occurred. The WAR has a great impact/effect towards them. Because of the war, they decrease the number of population, they have no central government, the crops and properties were destroyed, disunity, and there is no development towards their arts, culture, and etc.

At around 1200 BC, many Mycenaean settlements in Greece were destroyed and abandoned. The collapse of the beurucratic system the Myceneans had used resulted in what is called the "Dark Age of Greece". Whether or not the Dorians were responsible for this destruction, we do not know for sure.

When did the dark ages begin in Europe?

It might be safest to say the Dark Ages lasted from the 5th century to the 10th century. The term Dark Ages is not really clearly defined, and in fact has fallen from use quite a bit. Originally, the idea of an age of obscurity was used to describe the period after the fall of the West Roman Empire. At the time the concept of Dark Ages was first described, in about 1330, the Renaissance had not yet started, and the writer, Petrarch, regarded himself as living in the dark ages. Later writers regarded the Dark Ages as the time from the fall of the West Roman Empire to the Renaissance, and so dated them identically with the Middle Ages, from the 5th century to the 15th. During the 19th century, historians came to understand the the Middle Ages had a lot going on, too much to be called Dark, in the sense of decline or decay. They began to make the time equal to those parts of the Middle Ages when there was little written, meaning the time of the 5th through 10th centuries. This idea had already been around for some time. Under this scheme, the Middle Ages were between the Dark Ages and the Renaissance. The idea that the Carolingian Renaissance and Macedonian Renaissance, with their growth of culture and education, happened during a time of decay and decline, seems to fly in the face of logic. So many historians refer to the time from the 5th to 10th centuries as the Early Middle Ages instead of Dark Ages. Under this scheme, the term is not used at all. There have been people who had different, specific ideas of what the Dark Ages were.

Why the fourth century AD called dark ages?

The 4th century lasted from 301 to 400 AD. The term Dark Ages is usually applied to the years from 476 to 1000 AD. The Dark Ages are usually portrayed as a time of ignorance and superstition, which is why they are called Dark. The name is deceptive, however, because the lack of literacy that is generally considered to be characteristic of the Dark Ages began during the 3rd century AD, and the period of 476 to 1000 AD included times referred to as the Macedonian Renaissance, the Carolingian Renaissance, and the Ottonian Renaissance. The name Dark Ages is falling out of use to some extent because of this, with the term Early Middle Ages preferred by many historians.
