Travel was by foot for the residents of a village. The Lord of the Manor would be the only one with access to horses. Some of the villagers and local farmers would travel to neighbhouring villages on market days for trade, but travel generally was limited. This is how local accents came about in places like the UK. Each village had their own form of the language because of the isolation.
Daylight dominated the schedules of people in the middle ages. Daylight was the only really bright light available, so people, including blacksmiths and other craftsman, tended to rise early, eat a light breakfast, and get to the work of the day as soon as there was adequate light. Work days were longer in Summer than in Winter, as there was more available light. Work days ended when the sun went down, and medieval people would likely spend the dark hours indoors, lighting their dwellings with firelight. Candles and lamps were known, but candles were expensive and dim unless used in large numbers.
Why do you spend money at an arcade? Same thing.
Seriously though, they had no free time. Work, work, work. Except Sunday. The Medieval Peasant attended Mass (if it's pre-Reformation) or a Protestant Service (post-Reformation). Then, if they were lucky, the Pope called a Crusade, and they went off to fight for the glory of God and more than likely die of scurvy on the way there.
had more free time and more money to spend .
This is debatable. In my opinion I'm not sure. It is possible they could'NT stop. The Roman people were so used to their luxury and even the poor had decent lives, that if the Government took it away, a revolt could be sparked.

Any village, town or city relies on an industry for economical reasons, this is why there is the phrase, 'steel towns' or 'wheat villages'. A tourist village is a village where people work in tourism and rely on visiting people to spend their money inside their village. A tourist village will be very busy with a lot of stangers during warmer months when it is ideal for travelling, and then it will seem no one has any work when the weather is colder, all the tourists have gone.
