Did the halves of the Roman empire attack each other?

The eastern and western parts of the Roman Empire were two parts of a sole Roman Empire and never attacked each other. They did not attack each other because they were part of the same empire. In fact there ware alternations of periods with co-emperors (with one in charge of the east and one in charge of the west) and periods with a sole emperor for the whole of the empire. In 307 Galerius, the senior emperor in the eastern part, attacked Maxentius, a usurper emperor in Italy. However, this was not an attack of the east on the west. It was an attempt to deal with usurpation. Finding himself in a vulnerable position, Galerius did not engage Maxentius, withdrew from Italy and proclaimed Licinius as senior emperor in the west and Constantine as junior emperor in the west. Maxentius was eventually defeated by Constantine, who, after winning a civil war against Licinius (who had become senior emperor of the eastern part of the empire after the defeat of Maxentius) became the sole emperor of the whole Roman Empire. Theodosius I attacked Magnus Maximus a usurper emperor who took over the provinces of the western part of the Roman Empire except for Italy. Theodosius won. After this the emperor of the western part of the empire, Valentinian II, was found hanging in his room and there was another usurper emperor, Eugenius. Theodosius defeated him and became the sole emperor of the whole of the Roman Empire.

Who contributed to the weakness of the western roman empire?

The western part of the empire fell under the weight of the invasions by the Germanic peoples. The Romans lost political cohesion and fought each other instead of confronting the rebellions. An effective emperor who had made headway against the invaders was deposed and executed in a power struggle. There were king makers and usurpers and the turnover of emperors was high. In the end the western part of the Roman Empire lost all of its lands.

How did Rome fall?

The ancient Roman Empire fell because it was unable to logistically maintain its military supremacy in Europe. This was despite the de facto control of the government by military leaders in place of the Emperor. After the fall of Rome to Germanic mercenaries in 476 AD, the eastern or Byzantine Empire continued for another 1,000 years until conquered by the Ottomans in the 1400's.In Some DetailThe Western Roman Empire which was ruled by the City of Rome fell because of the lack of manpower to defend its borders from Barbarians who all wanted a piece of the Roman Land. Bad Emperor after Bad Emperor was put on the throne. Each Legion of the Roman Army wanted one of their own people on the throne. Finally, Constantine became Emperor and moved the Capital to Constantinople (modern day Istanbul). While this happened, the Western Empire was put into ruin. More and More often the Western Roman Empire was forced to make deals with the Barbarians who said that they would defend the Western Roman Empire if they were allowed to live in Roman territories. One day Alaric, leader of the Visigoth, realized that Roman Forces were spread thinly in the Empire and in AD 410 he and his Army began to cautiously move South and into Italy. The Romans might have just withdrawn to the Italian Peninsula and held that for another 100-200 years until they had the manpower to retake Europe. But instead, the Roman Army let the barbarians move unopposed through Italy. When they finally reached the city of Rome, they sacked the city. Other barbarians came and attacked the city, but the City of Rome finally stayed out of Roman hands when Romulus Augustus became Emperor of Rome. When Romulus was removed from power in 476 AD, the emperor Zeno of the Eastern Empire accepted the Germanic chieftain Odoacer as ruler of Italy. This marked the end of the Western Roman Empire. :P

Each of the following factors EXCEPT contributed to the fall of the Roman Empire.?

One factor that did not contribute to the fall of the Roman Empire was Christianity. Some pagan Romans thought that Christianity had weakened the empire by eroding the fighting fibre of the Romans. This was not the case. When the roman state recognised Christianity, the empire regained political stability and attained a sense of religious unity among the majority of the population of the empire, which was Christian. The Great Persecution of the Christians unleashed by emperor Diocletian in 303 created widespread social unrest which was destabilising for the empire. This led Galerius, an emperor who took part in the Great Persecution, to issue his Edict of Toleration (of Christianity) in 311 to restore the stability of the empire.

How did Christianity become the official religion of the byzanitine empire?

Byzantine Empire is a term which has been coined by historians to indicate the eastern part of the Roman Empire after the fall of the western part. The people in question did not even know this term and called their empire Roman Empire. Christianity spread though the eastern part of the Roman Empire before the fall of the western part. Christianity developed into two main forms, the Latin or Western Church and the Greek or Eastern church. The former was the main form of Christianity in the western part of the empire and the latter was the main one in the eastern part. Later they came to be called Catholic and orthodox respectively. Both these branches of Christianity became state religion in 380. Therefore, what we now call Orthodox Christianity was already the religion of the eastern part of the Roman empire before the Byzantine period.

What happened to the roman empire in the year what happened to the roman empire in the year 395?

Emperor Theodosius I died in 395. He was the last emperor who ruled the east and the west of the empire alone. The Western Roman Empire passed on to his son Honorius. The Eastern Roman Empire passed on to his other son, Arcadius. 395 has been set as the year when the two parts of the empire split. The two sons were young and inexperienced and were manipulated by politicians. Politicians in the east and west started conspiring against each other, undermining the unity of the empire. Moreover, the Western Empire started collapsing under the weight of Germanic invasions (which caused massive losses of land), a string usurpations, and other political infighting. As the Western Empire was disintegrating, it became a puppet of the emperor of the east.
