The third century crisis, and the later border invasions that were inproperly dealt with and often led to usurpation attempts whereby the army would ignore the invaders and concentrate on defeating fellow Romans. the best books are undoubtedly peter heathers, Bryan ward perkins' and Adrian Goldsworthys.
