The Romans practiced augury. This was a form of divination which was the reading of the omens of the gods. The main forms of augury were readings from the signs in the sky or signs from the fight of birds. However, auguries could also be read from the behaviour of many kinds of animals.

The ex tripudiis type of augury was taken from the feeding behaviour of hens. It was used especially for predicting the outcome of battles by using hens taken on military expeditions.

Some hens were kept in a cage. The cage was then opened and some pulses or a sort of cake was put in front of it. If the hens refused to come out or eat, made loud noises, flapped their wings or flew away, the omens were bad. If the hens eat eagerly and a pulse of crumb fell off their beak and hit the ground, the omens were good.

What was whispered in the ear of victorious roman emperors?

Anything could be whispered in the ear of a victorious Roman emperor if someone could get close enough to him. However if you mean a victorious Roman general (he could also be an emperor) during his triumph, a slave was supposed to hold a crown over the man's head and whisper "remember you are only a man". This was because the Roman triumph was a very serious, sacred occasion with the triumphing general being on a par with the god Jupiter for that day.Anything could be whispered in the ear of a victorious Roman emperor if someone could get close enough to him.
