Unfortunately, Marc Antony is famous for the hyped up romance with Cleopatra. His other accomplishments, although not as great a some would have you believe, are overshadowed by his affair with Cleo and its consequences.

Mark Antony was the son of a cousin of Julius Caesar's. He was one of Caesar's best generals during the invasion of Gaul. He was briefly in charge of the administration of Italy when Caesar took charge of Rome after he won his civil war against the forces of the senate. Caesar had him promoted to the offices of quaestor, plebeian tribune and consuls. He was also a Lupercal priest and chief priest of the personal cult Caesar created for himself.

When Caesar was assassinated mark Antony took the lead in the Caesarians (supporters of Caesar) resistance to the assassins of Caesar. He then formed a three-man alliance between the main leaders of the Caesarian faction (Octavian and Lepidus) which historians call the Second Triumvirate. The Second Triumvirate was given a five year mandate (which was extended by another five years) to govern Rome and her territories with extraordinary powers. It fought and won a civil war against the forces of the assassins of Caesar. After that Mark Antony took charge of the Roman territories in the east.

Mark Antony is now most famous for his love affairs with Cleopatra VII of Egypt. He gave the three sons he had with her kingdoms in areas of his territories and made Cleopatra and Caesarion (the son she had from her affair with Caesar) Queen of Queens and King of Kings of Egypt.

Mark Antony and Cleopatra were defeated by Octavian in the final power struggle to have a sole ruler of Rome: the Final Civil War of the Roman Republic.
