The term decline of the Roman Empire is used to indicate a period of decline in the economy and in the ability of to defend the empire which started with the crisis of the 3rd century. Years of debasement (reduction in the precious metal content) of coins by emperors who wanted more coins to finance their expenses led to devaluation. The Roman coins ended up with almost no value. This caused a breakdown in trade which in turn led to the collapse of the urban economy which was based of the production of goods for long distance trade. Many people moved to the country and the towns shrank. These people were turned into servile labour by the owner of the large landed estates and rural production became for local use rather than for the towns.

The vast frontiers of the empire came under constant attack by many migrating peoples. This overstretched the army which had to continually move from one area to another to respond to the attacks. It also led to an increase in the size of the army and, especially, the cavalry, which was even more expensive. This created a financial burden which was not helpful at a time of economic crisis. The instability caused by constant attacks and rebellions by army generals added more trouble. The empire then became more stable, but it recovered from this crisis only partially as many of these changes were irreversible.
