Serf's houses were built very inexpensively, by the serfs themselves.

The roof was usually thatched, made from bundles of straw or reeds, or it could be made of slate or wooden shingles, depending on what was easiest to get.

The walls were usually made of timbers, rather widely set, with the open areas filled with wattle and daub (woven reeds and mud), or with rubble filled with mud. If there were a lot of small rocks around, these could be used to build a rough stone house. If inexpensive timber was available, wood could be used for siding. In cold areas, log cabins were used.

The floor was normally dirt.

The hearth was either stone, tile, or just dirt. There were no chimneys until the 11th or 12th centuries, and serfs could not afford them when they came into use. So there was some sort of hole in the roof or under the roof peaks to let smoke out.

The windows were typically shuttered, but not glazed. The doors were often very light.
