Feudalism was a system in which landowners pledged loyalty to more powerful landowners, becoming their vassals. The majority of people were peasants, farming land they did not own.
Serfs owed crops to their lords.

Serfs lived outside the castle walls.

Lords had a lot of power over serfs.

Kings owned the land, and lords owed them loyalty.

Europe's feudal system arose around the ninth and tenth centuries. Feudalism was based on an agreement between a lord, or landowner, and a vassal, a personwho received land from a lord. In exchange for land, or a fief, a vassal promised to help his lord in battle. under feudalism, society in western Europe was divided into three groups. Those who fought were the nobles and knights. Those who prayed were the officials of the church. Those who worked were the peasants. Peasants were by far the largest group. Most peasants were serfs, who were not free to move about as they wished. They were tied to the land of their lord.

Feudalism is the social system, or structure, usually resembled as a pyramid from the most important to the least important of peoples. In Medieval Europe, this would appear with the Crown at the very top, with all others falling beneath in power. The pyramid normally appears as follows, top to bottom: (Crown and Lords)-(Nobles and Knights): who serve the Crown with their military strength in exchange for land.-(Tenants): who serve the Knights or Nobles.-(Serfs): the peasant people, who were protected by their lord in exchange for labor and/or a percentage of their produce.
