The lords could survive much more easily and all the workers were safe. Trade was too dangerous for them.

Serfs could work there in exchange for protection

-----

Serfs worked on the manors in exchange for protection, a place to live, and fields to farm or some similar work. In exchange, they provided a day or two of labor per week, and part of the harvest.
In exchange for their labor, or whatever other form their rent might have been in, the serfs got three things: a place to live, fields to farm, and protection. The protection was of all kinds, and the lord's duty included not only military or police protection, but also food in time of famine (at least in theory).

The benefits peasants got depended on the types of peasants they were.

The lowest level of peasants were usually serfs. Serfs were not slaves, because they could not be bought or sold. They were regarded as attached to the land they worked, and had a right to be there. If the land was sold, they were not evicted, and the new owner had to respect that. They had a right to a place to live, a place to raise their crops, and protection from their local lord. What they gave up in exchange for this was their right to leave the land, and labor on the lord's lands.

At a higher social level were tenant farmers. They had what were the equivalent of modern leases to the property they used, and they paid rent. They had more freedom than serfs, but little in the way of feudal benefits, because the lords only owed them what the lease specified.

At the top of the peasants' social latter were yeomen. These were farmers who owned land, but not enough land to have manors. Their farms were commonly 40 to 100 acres in size, and they usually had helpers living with them, usually serfs. They owed military duty to counts or kings, and paid taxes, but did not pay rent. Again, they had more freedom, but little in the way of feudal benefits.
