Rome collapsed in 476 A.D. The conventional date for the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire is 476, the year when Romulus Augustus, the last emperor of the western part of this empire, was deposed. The eastern part of the Roman Empire fell in 1453 , when Constantinople was conquered by the Ottoman Turks.
The Roman Empire fell in 476 AD, with the abdication of Romulus Augustus because of the pressures of the invading Barbarian Chieftain, Odoacer. This was caused because Romulus Augustus refused to provide land to barbarians in the heartland of the Roman Empire (Italy). Afterwards, Odoacer dissolved the position of Western Roman Emperor. However, Odoacer's reign as King of Italy was short, displaying the instability of the times. Theodoric the Amal invaded Italy with the support of the Eastern Emperor Zeno (488 AD).

The Roman Empire did not exactly collapse. The last emperor of the west wasn't killed, as he simply acknowledged that the west was now a set of individual kingdoms. The eastern part was taken by the Ottomans in 1453.

Traditionally it is considered to have ended in 476 AD, when the Germanic general Odoacer removed the child emperor Romulus Augustus from the throne, and did not replace him with a new emperor.
However, it can be argued that it ended at other times. The last emperor before Romulus Augustus, a man named Julius Nepos, was removed from Rome by Romulus's father. After Romulus was deposed, Julius was still alive and living in the area of what we now know as the former Yugoslavia. He never stopped claiming to be emperor and that Romulus was a usurper; he continued ruling that area (former Yugoslavia) until he was murdered a few years later. So one could argue that it ended in 475 (when Romulus's father usurped the throne) or in 480 (when Julius was murdered).
There was also a region in what is now northern France where a Roman general named Syagrius ruled for about 10 years after Odoacer fired Romulus. Eventually he was defeated by German tribe called the Franks and his territory was taken by them.
I've even seen some people claim that 455 AD was when the western empire ended- that was when a German tribe called the Vandals attacked the city of Rome and sacked it. However, the capital of western empire had already been moved from Rome to the city of Ravenna in northern Italy.

The Roman Empire had been divided into the East Roman Empire, with its capital at Constantinople, and the West Roman Empire, with its capital either at Rome or Ravenna, in 395. The West Roman Empire was in a state of chaos, with various Germanic kingdoms forming, and though they nominally acknowledged the fact that they were in the Roman Empire, for the most part, they were not really under control. In 476, the last emperor of the West Roman Empire was deposed, and the emperor of the East Roman Empire was asked to assume control of the whole. This is the event referred to as the Fall of the Roman Empire. The Roman Senate, which had operated in Rome since before the Roman Republic continued to operate after the purported fall, and its last known act was after the year 600. The East Roman Empire continued to operate until Constantinople fell to the Turks in 1453.
The date most often given for the fall of Rome is 476. What actually happened in 476 was that the last emperor of the West Roman Empire, the western half of the Roman Empire, abdicated in that year, in favor of the emperor of the eastern half, the East Roman Empire, or, as we call it, the Byzantine Empire.
A Germanic leader named Odoacer deposed the last Western Roman Emperor in the year 476. Odoacer is generally given credit for abolishing the empire.
