People of the Middle Ages avoided using the interval we call the augmented fourth or diminished fifth, also referred to as a tritone. This is the interval between B and F, or F and B. It is used a lot in modern music, but in the Middle Ages, its use was discouraged, particularly for sacred music, because it was considered too dissonant. You cannot really get an idea of what it sounded like in those days by using a modern instrument, because our instruments are nearly always well tempered, and the tuning of the B is different from what it was in those days. The actual interval is used today for some sirens with alternating pitches, because it is very annoying.

There's no fun in playing it safe. Why not try something a little unhinged?
