Christianity was not made the official language of the Roman Empire because it is not a language.

Mainstream Christianity, Western or Latin Christianity and Eastern or Greek Christianity were made the sole legitimate religions of the empire by the Edict of Thessalonica by co-emperors Gratian, Theodosius I and Valentinian II in 380. The purpose of the edict was to ban the other Christian sects, which were branded as heretic. Their persecution started soon after the issuing of the edict. The main target was Arian Christianity, which was popular around the empire.

Later Latin or Western Christianity came to be called Catholic and Greek or Eastern Christianity came to be called Orthodox.

In 380 co-emperors Gratian, Valentinian II and Theodosius I issued the edict of Thessalonica that stated all citizens should profess the faith of the bishops of Rome and Alexandria (Roman Catholicism and Orthodox Christianity). This was a move against the Arian branch of Christianity which at the time was popular, especially in the eastern areas of the empire, and whose doctrine was different. The edict established the Catholic Church (at the time this included both the Roman Catholic and the Orthodox branches of Christianity, which were also called the Creed of Nicene) as the only legitimate imperial religion and the only one which would receive state support. Soon after this there were persecutions of pagans.

How did Christianity become the official religion of Rome?

Oh, dude, it's like this - so back in the day, Emperor Constantine was like, "Hey, this Christianity thing seems pretty cool," and he legalized it with the Edict of Milan in 313 AD. Then, Emperor Theodosius was all, "Let's make it official," and bam, Christianity became the official religion of Rome in 380 AD. So yeah, that's how it went down.

Which religion was dominant at the end of the Roman Empire?

Great Question!Christianity was legalized in the Roman Empire, and was made the official state religion in 380 by Theodosius (the last ruler of the combined Roman Empire). Here's the thing though - that doesn't mean the majority of people followed it.The truth is that many people would have desired to hang on to their religious roots in the "old gods". However, when it was made the state religion it would have become illegal to not be a Christian. From 380 on Rome was the center of Christianity in the west, so by far the most likely answer is that Nicene Christianity was the dominant religion.

When was chtistianity made the official religion of Rome?

Theodosius I was co-emperor during the latter years of Emperor Gratian's reign, and both were responsible for making Christianity the official religion of Rome, although most of the credit is usually given to Theodosius. On the 27th of February in the year 380, they made Nicene Christianity the official Christian religion of Rome, however it is unclear whether this was intended to apply to pagans. The emperor Gratian was influenced by St. Ambrosius to establish Nicene Christianity as the state religion. It had risen in importance to the point that Constantine's Edict of Milan granted it tolerance in 313, and had been the religion of all emperors after that time, except Julian.Emperor Theodosius declared Christianity the state religion of the Roman Empire in 381 at the same time outlawing the pagan religion. Public worship at pagan temples was outlawed in 391.
