That was one of the main problems. When Rome fell in 410AD that left avacuum for government and services. The society finally came down to three "estates". These were the church, the nobility, and the merchant class. The leading estate was the church. The priests and church set the rules for all of the society. The people of this time were told that they were born in sin and had to repent their entire life to get into heaven. To do this they must do what the church told them to do because the church was how people communicated with God. It was through the church that God gave them directions and rules to follow. This was easy for the church to do since no one could read The Bible so they depended on the church to tell them the stories from the bible. One way they did this was with the stories in the stain glass windows and the passion plays. Needless to say, when the printing press was invented the church tried to keep people from reading the bible because they knew that they would loose control and that is exactly what happened. The church was also able to tell the nobility what to do for the same reasons, so everyone fell in line with the churches teaching and they were able to control the society.
