During the Mid-Republic Carthage was a major rival. Rome and Carthage fought the Three Punic Wars against each other. After this there was not a major rival which was capable of measuring up to Rome's military prowess.

They ranged from the Etruscans, Sabines, Volsci, Aequi, Samnites, King Pyrrhus of Epirus (a kingdom on Greece), the Carthaginians, the kingdom of Macedon in Greece, the Seleucid Empire, king Mithridates VI of Pontus, the Dacians, two of the four pre-Islamic Persian empires (the Parthian Empire and the Sassanian Empire, and the various Germanic peoples who invaded the Roman Empire.
