because the pope owned the land and it was his choice

Answer:

It was powerful in Europe because it was the primary provider of education, shelter, and medical care.

For centuries, before governments even considered taking on those roles, the Catholic church built schools and hospitals, introduced the first universities, and provided financial support for science.

As well, prior to the Reformation, the church represented the vast majority of Europeans, which made it the institution strong enough to provide a check on the power of kings.

Because of the harsh conditions of the medieval times people turned to the church because they only hoped to get to heaven, this caused the church to become powerful because it could influence the people.

If the actions of any local ruler displeased the Pope that ruler would be excommunicated and all churches in that ruler's lands were closed. With the churches closed the people could not attend Mass and other Church rituals that Catholicism taught were essential to salvation. Usually this caused the people to conclude that their ruler was "sending them to hell" by his actions and there was often a popular uprising to either force the ruler to "repent" so the excommunication would be removed and the churches reopened or replace the ruler with a "loyal Catholic" that would do the wishes of the Pope. This gave Popes and the Catholic church enormous political power.
