The Roman Soldiers were the most important because they were the key to the Roman's success. Without them the "Roman Revolution" would have never been possible! Roman soldiers built roads, bridges, ports, public building's and the Hadrian's Wall! The Roman Civilians would rely on the Roman Soldiers to act as their "local police force ".

Because they could conquer new lands and defend themselves in battle. The military was also the force that did the major Roman building. The roads, bridges, aqueducts, and Hadrian's wall were all built by the military. In addition the military was many times the deciding factor in promoting an emperor, especially in the later antiquity.

Which empire led rome at the time of its conquest?

There was not an empire which led Rome and there was not a conquest of Rome. Rome had an empire: the Roman Empire. Although the invasions by the Germanic peoples led to the fall of the western part of the Roman Empire, the city of Rome was never conquered. Ancient Rome was sacked by the Visigoths in 410 and by the Vandals in 455, but it was not conquered. Both Visigoths and Vandals withdrew after the sack. They did so before units of the Roman army from elsewhere in the Roman Empire would catch up with them.

Charlemagne's empire was called the Empire of the Roman People. This was rather inconvenient, because the East Roman Empire was still operating and WA also called the Empire of the Roman People.
